John has extensive experience of the public and not-for-profit sectors. Until 2002, he was a director of Compass Partnership, the not-for-profit management consultancy, which he joined in 1996 after five years with the UK government agency, the Audit Commission. Whilst at the Commission, he led their work with the social housing sector’s funding and regulatory agency, the Housing Corporation, writing three national reports on performance and management issues in social housing. He also led service and quality reviews of a range of other public service providers across London and SE of England.
Prior to an MBA, John worked as the Director of North Staffordshire MIND, and was the Africa Programme Manager for the UK NGO Help the Aged. He also spent seven years with Voluntary Service Overseas, during which time he worked in London as a Development Officer and in Zambia and Belize as the Programme Director. John is a Fellow of the Institute of Business Consulting, a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development and a member of the Chartered Management Institute. He is a Fellow of the RSA.
John’s assignments have included strategic planning, governance and management reviews with leading government, social housing and large national voluntary organisations. They have included change management for one of DfID’s key departments, strategic planning and management reviews for agencies sponsored by the DTI, the Home Office and the Department of Health and published research on the governance of housing associations for the Housing Corporation. Assignments outside the UK have included East and Southern Africa, the Middle East and many other European countries. Recent clients include the National Housing Federation, Notting Hill Housing Trust, the European Network Against Racism and RNIB.
In early 2003, John established Transform as a management consultancy specialising in strategic and change management for organisations committed to social change.
"From Walsingham’s perspective, BoardsCount™ has been an extremely helpful tool to enable us to review our overall governance and to develop an Action Plan to progress in a variety of areas. Being able to benchmark against other similar organisations has also been insightful both in highlighting things we are doing well and areas were we can further develop.
