Governance resources:

  •  NCVO's Leadership and Governance sections  provide a link to the new Governance and Leadership Support Service (NSS) which will take over where the Governance Hub left off.  Other resources include the Trustee Bank and details of the NCVO OnBoard Trustee Conference 2009.
  • The City Centre for Charity Effectiveness (courtesy of the Cass Business School and the Big Lottery Fund) has a new and interesting website.  I like the page on 'An Effective Board' where you can an overview of a number of resources to help a board.
  • ACEVO, the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations, includes on its site a range of publication and advice on questions of governance
  • NAVCA, the national voice of local third sector infrastructure in England, includes on its site a governance section with links to other resources
  • The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) has on its site a governance page with a link to its special governance site
  • WCVA (Welsh Council for Voluntary Action)'s governance section includes a range of handy information sheets designed to give advice
  • NICVA, the Northern Ireland's Council for Voluntary Action's governance & charity advice section includes a range of inputs include a free online governance health check tool - 
  • In the Republic of Ireland, the Wheel's site includes a governance section with links to key publications from Ireland and the UK
  • Charity Trustee Network's Trustee Net is a site specially designed for the trustee and includes access to a range of networks and forums for the trustee including a chair to chair link up.
  • Community Matters has a range of governance resources for community organisations, including a series of fact-sheets and its VISIBLE quality tool.
  • The European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI) provides a link to what's happening in all member states of the European Union and beyond.
  • Among the Charity Commission's online resources is their site's Promoting Good Performance Section, which includes a number of key governance resources including the Code of Good Governance.
  • For a private sector take on governance, see the Financial Reporting Council's site, which includes free access to the Combined Code, which has been a key influence on governance in the third sector
  • The Charity Governance magazine is a regular source of up-to-date information and views.
  • Within the social housing sector, there is the National Housing Federation (NHF) whose site has a range of relevant publication on governance
  • The Housing Corporation, the social housing sector's regulator and funder has a wide range of guidance and advice. Put 'governance' in their internal search engine and see what comes up. Their publications also include a guide to how to assess governance performance upon which BoardsCount™ is structured.
  • Within the social enterprise sector, the Social Enterprise Coalition has a useful publications jointly developed with the Governance Hub on governance
  • The Cooperatives sector, key body, Cooperatives UK, has a useful governance section - which includes specific sections for the needs of specific subsectors like housing coops, etc
  • The Development Trusts Association has a section its site on participative governance as well as a health check service that includes governance
  • A good source on school governance is GovernorNet
  • Searches of the government watchdog sites of the Audit Commission and the National Audit Office reveal publications on governance in sectors such as health and local government
  • The British Association of Setlements (bassac) and Social Action Centres is a membership network of multi-purpose community organisations. It reperesents it's diverse members at a national elvel and offers them stratgic support.
  • Black Training and Enterprise Group (BTEG) aims to achieve improvements for black people, in areas of employment, economic regeneration, education and enterprise.
  • Board Builders, based in America, working internationally to help non-profits reach a higher level of success, and to help boards and staff achieve greater joy.
  • Boardsource, USA-based resource for practical information, best practice, training, and leadership development for boards of nonprofit organisations.
  • Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) encourages and develops mediation and other cost-effective dispute resolution and prevention techniques. NCVO, in partnership with CEDR, offer a mediation service for the voluntary sector.
  • The Ethnic Minority Foundation is committed to extending opportunities to people from ethnic minority communities.
  • Governance Institute, based in America, conducts research studies and showcases best practice.
  • Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) is the professional body for Chartered Secretaries. A Chartered Secretary is qualified in company law, accounting, corporate governance, administration, company secretarial practice and management.
  • Public Concern at Work is the charity that assists whistleblowers and advises organisations on whistleblowing.
  • Trustee Bank lists organisations which can help you fill trustee vacancies, or help you find a vacancy to become a trustee.
